What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique developed by Francesco Cirillo combines planning, timed work, breaks and reflection. A familiar starting schedule uses 25-minute work intervals separated by short breaks. Our classic session guide explains how to choose and review a task.

The method is structured around five steps:

  1. Choose a task you want to work on
  2. Set the timer to 25 minutes (one pomodoro)
  3. Work on the task with full focus until the timer rings
  4. Take a short break of 5 minutes
  5. After four pomodoros, take a longer break of 15–30 minutes

The schedule gives a task a clear start and a planned pause. Review what you completed and adjust your intervals; no single work rhythm guarantees better concentration.

Choose a starting point:

  • Study timer — Plan practice questions, check answers and choose a later review.
  • Coding timer — Define a debugging step and leave a restart note before a break.
  • 25/5 preset — Configure a work-and-break routine, including rounds and auto-start.
  • 25-minute countdown — Time a single activity and choose your break separately.
